San Mateo has community spirit!

San Mateo High School is deeply involved in its community through many programs and educational services, including our Biotechnology Career Pathway, San Mateo Adult Resources Technology (SMART) Center, and San Mateo Performing Arts Center. What's more, our student population is encouraged to serve its community through our annual Blood Drive, Volunteer Fair, and world's biggest Canned Food Drive.

SAN MATEO HIGH SCHOOL CANNED FOOD DRIVE

WHAT: The San Mateo High School Canned Food Drive
WHEN:  Nov 20th-Dec 7th, 2009
WHO: San Mateo High School Students and Staff
HOW: Collect cans and donations throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara County

The 1300 students of San Mateo High School has been recognized by Guinness Book of World Record for holding the title of World’s Largest Food Drive.  The student body hopes to top our record from last year. Our annual drive benefits the Samaritan House, an organization that helps about 7,500 needy people, half of whom are children, throughout San Mateo County. Our drive also benefits Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.

Our goal in this year is to get 300,000 pounds of food!! (We count actual pounds and monetary donations: $1.00 = 4 pounds). This event has a positive impact on our school community and the San Mateo County. Last year we raised over 270,000 pounds ($50,000 and over 30,000 pounds of food.)

What makes this drive so successful?  San Mateo High has a student population which is both economically and ethnically diverse.  We are known for our school spirit and sense of community, which is actively fostered by the staff and the 36 student body officers in the Leadership class.  Every holiday season, our focus becomes the community, and our spirit is galvanized into action for the Samaritan House and Second Harvest Food Bank. We believe we are a reflection of America, succeeding as one community united by a common goal.

San Mateo students and staff have become Miracle Makers. Please share this inspiring event with your friends and family. It has such a positive impact in our community. A few years ago we were recognized in the Guinness Book of Records.  Every year we try to get local media involved too.  Anything you can do to help spread the word and further our efforts would be greatly appreciated.
