In this class students study the developmental stages of young children. Topics include parenting; child development; guidance and discipline; abuse and neglect; health and safety; earning and play; cultural diversity; and children with special needs. Knowledge is applied through volunteering at Turnbull Child Development Center and planning activities for preschool students.

NUTRITION 1

This is an introductory class for students who want to learn the basics about nutrition and cooking. The food pyramid, nutrients and evaluating food labels will be explored as they relate to making healthy food choices. Students will be given opportunities to practice skills in measuring, food preparation, safety, sanitation and meal service/etiquette. Students will work independently and in groups to complete labs and in healthy snacks, breakfast foods and quick and easy meals.

This is a class for students who want to expand upon their knowledge of nutrition and improve culinary skills. Special emphasis will be on carbohydrates, proteins and fats in terms of dietary analysis and weight management. Students will have opportunities to learn various cooking techniques through preparation of selected foods while gaining a basic understanding of healthy meal planning on a budget. Careers related to the food service and hospitality industry will also be explored.

ROP

HOTEL & HOSPITALITY SERVICES

An overview of the hospitality industry, its history, service strategies and interrelationships of hotel, restaurant, travel and leisure industries with a concentration in the lodging industry. Students will gain necessary skills and knowledge for an exciting career in the hotel and hospitality industry. Learn front desk, guest services, food and beverage, housekeeping, sales and catering, engineering and so much more! Class includes tours of various hotels, computer-based instruction, group activities and role playing, along with extensive customer service training. Preparation for the following positions but not limited to, reservationists, front desk agent, banquet server, housekeeping attendant, luggage attendant, room service server, restaurant server/hostess, human resources assistant, sales and catering assistant, utility engineer, accounting clerk and convention services set-up. Course provides the opportunity for on-the-job training (internships) with teacher approval at wonderful ROP partner hotels in the local area, some of which include: Embassy Suites SSF, Best Western El Rancho Inn & Executive Suites, Hampton Inn Daly City, Doubletree SFO Airport and Sheraton Gateway.
