Special Education

San Mateo High School offers a continuum of programs for students with disabilities.

The Resource Specialist Program (RSP) and Special Day Class Program (SDC) offer classes designed to meet the unique needs of students who have been identified as having learning disabilities.  The students enrolled in the RSP program generally have most of their core classes (English, History, Science, P.E. and Math) in mainstreamed classes at SMHS.  The students in the SDC program generally have most of their academic core classes taught in the Special Day Class.

Students enrolled in the programs offered through the Department of Special Education will be assigned a Special Education counselor who schedules classes, implements the student’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and acts as the liaison for the student, parent, classroom teacher and administration.  The following support services are available:  speech/language therapy, vocational assistance and counseling via San Mateo County Health.

Students may be referred for special education assessment by their parent, teacher or school counselor.  All requests for an evaluation are process through the Student Study Team (SST).

State Eligibility criteria must be met for a student to receive special education services.  Placement services are determined by the IEP team.  All efforts to provide instruction in the least restrictive environment are made.
