About the Foundation

The San Mateo High School Foundation is a volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to raising money to fund key academic programs and facility improvement projects at SMHS.

The foundation reaches out to parents, alumni, community leaders, businesses, and foundations for private philanthropic support to fund projects identified by the SMHS staff and administration. The Foundation also strives to create an active and formal SMHS Alumni Association.

The Foundation was founded in 2003 as SMHS Athletics Foundation with the goal of raising private funds to support the completion of the all-weather track and field at San Mateo High School.

Completed in October of 2003. the field was named the MaryAnn Johnson Memorial Field in recognition of a gift by her husband Andrew and her sons. Other athletic facility improvements funded by the Foundation include additional fitness equipment in the Fitness Center and the purchase and installation of a Colorado Timing System, scoreboard and starting blocks for the benefit of the school’s aquatic programs.

With the completion of the new academic buildings in 2005, the Foundation voted to remove the word Athletics from its name to reflect its expanded charter to raise funds to support a broad set of academic and facility related programs and initiatives at the San Mateo High School.

The Foundation has sponsored two Magic of Mateo fundraiser galas, raising over $180,000 in October 2005 and 2006. The 3rd annual event is planned for October 13, 2007. Proceeds have funded the Barbara Snider College Pathways Program, Bearcat Basics, the Diamond Grants, the Librarian/ELP and Technology Coordinators, the Experiential Learning Program, a language lab and training, and helped to offset district-wide budget cuts. To date over $1.5 million has been raised to support the various curriculum enhancements and facility improvement projects at San Mateo High School.
