Special Education

As required by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (I.D.E.A.), the San Mateo Union High School District provides a continuum of services for students with disabilities. Some services for students with moderate/severe disabilities are provided in conjunction with the San Mateo County Special Education Local Plan Area (S.E.L.P.A.) or with County Mental Health. All programs are open to students in grades 9-12. Not all programs are provided at each campus; students are placed through the Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) process in the program that best meets their needs. Most students in Special Education qualify for services as having a Specific Learning Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Speech and Language Impairment, Hearing Impairments/Deafness, or Other Health Impairment, but some are identified as having a Traumatic Brain Injury, Visual Impairment, e.t.c.  

Our goal is to assist students with disabilities to the best of our ability, and cater to their specific needs in order to guarantee a successful high school experience.

At San Mateo High School, we offer Specialized Academic Instruction (S.A.I.) classes and General Education Co-taught classes for our students with Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.s).  

Our Specialized Academic Instruction classes include all levels of English, Algebra and Geometry, and Science.
